Simple Ways to Extend Your Refrigerator’s Life & Cut Energy Costs

Small maintenance habits can help your refrigerator run more efficiently and prevent avoidable breakdowns.

Keep the condenser coils clean

Condenser coils release heat from inside the refrigerator to the outside air. When dust and pet hair build up on the coils, the compressor has to work harder to maintain temperature.

On many models the coils are located behind or underneath the refrigerator. Vacuuming or brushing them every 6–12 months can help the refrigerator run more efficiently.

Check the door gaskets

The rubber gaskets around the refrigerator and freezer doors create an airtight seal. If the gaskets are cracked, loose, or dirty, warm air can leak in — forcing the compressor to run more often.

Wipe the gaskets with a damp cloth regularly and inspect them for visible wear. If the door doesn’t seal firmly when closed, the gasket may need to be replaced.

Do not block air vents

Inside the refrigerator and freezer, there are air vents that distribute cold air. Placing items directly in front of these vents can restrict airflow and create uneven temperatures — leading to warm spots, frost buildup, or food that spoils faster.

Avoid overloading the refrigerator

An overpacked refrigerator restricts airflow between items, making it harder to maintain consistent temperature. Leave some space between items so cold air can circulate freely.

Set the right temperature

The recommended temperature for the fresh food compartment is between 35°F and 38°F. The freezer should be set to 0°F. Setting temperatures too low wastes energy; setting them too high can compromise food safety.

Let hot food cool before placing it inside

Putting hot containers directly into the refrigerator raises the internal temperature and forces the compressor to work harder. Let hot food cool to room temperature first — but don’t leave it out for more than two hours.

Keep the refrigerator level

If the refrigerator isn’t level, the doors may not seal properly, and the compressor may work harder than necessary. Most refrigerators have adjustable front legs or leveling feet. Use a bubble level to check, and adjust as needed.

Replace the water filter on schedule

If your refrigerator has a water filter, replacing it every 6 months (or as recommended by the manufacturer) helps maintain water flow and ice production. A clogged filter can reduce water pressure and affect ice maker performance.

Pay attention to early warning signs

Catching small problems early can prevent expensive repairs later. Watch for:

  • Unusual noises — clicking, buzzing, or humming louder than normal
  • The refrigerator running constantly without cycling off
  • Frost buildup inside the freezer
  • Water pooling under or inside the refrigerator
  • Inconsistent temperatures — some areas too warm, others too cold
  • The compressor feeling unusually hot to the touch

Do not ignore dirty or blocked drains

Most refrigerators have a defrost drain that carries water away during the defrost cycle. If this drain gets clogged with food particles or ice, water can back up and leak inside or under the unit. Cleaning the drain opening periodically can prevent this issue.

Keep the area around the refrigerator clear

The refrigerator needs space around it — especially at the back and top — to dissipate heat. Pushing it too close to the wall or boxing it in with cabinets can restrict airflow to the condenser and cause the compressor to overheat.

Schedule service before the problem gets worse

Many refrigerator problems start small — a slightly warm fridge, a minor leak, a strange noise. These issues tend to get worse over time and can eventually lead to a complete breakdown or food loss.

If something doesn’t seem right, scheduling a service visit sooner rather than later can save you time, money, and stress.
